How far ahead should you book?

Book about 2–3 months before you fly. Fare comparison data puts the best prices at around 70–90 days ahead, and fares are usually much higher in the last week.

For July, August and December, book earlier still. The cheapest seats sell first.

Don't book non-refundable flights before your visa is approved. If you need a visa, wait for the decision, or pay for a flexible fare. UKVI won't refund travel costs if your visa is delayed or refused.

Is it cheaper to fly with a stop?

Often, yes. Airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines fly via their hubs and can undercut direct fares. You trade a lower price for a longer trip, usually 15 hours or more.

Before you book, check whether South African passport holders need a transit visa for the airport you're connecting through.

How else can you save?

  • Be flexible by a few days. Midweek flights are often cheaper than Fridays and Sundays.
  • Compare Heathrow and Gatwick. Gatwick can be cheaper, especially from Cape Town.
  • Check baggage rules. A cheap fare without checked luggage can cost more once you add bags.
  • Set price alerts on a fare comparison site and book when the price drops.
