How long a UK visa takes depends mostly on the type of visa. Most are decided in about 3 weeks, but family visas take much longer. The decision is often the quick part: getting an appointment and your documents together usually takes longer.

All rand figures use R21.92/£ (Oct 2026).

How long do UK visas take from South Africa?

These are the UK government's standard processing times for applications made from outside the UK:

VisaStandard time
Standard Visitor3 weeks
Skilled Worker / Health and Care Worker3 weeks
UK Ancestry3 weeks
Student3 weeks
Spouse / Partner and other family visas12 weeks
Returning Resident3 weeks

These are targets, not guarantees. Most straightforward applications are decided within them, but yours can take longer.

When does the clock start?

The processing time starts when you either:

  • attend your VFS appointment in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban or Gqeberha (plus a limited service in Bloemfontein) and give your fingerprints and photo, or
  • verify your identity on the UK Immigration: ID Check app, if UKVI tells you that you can use it.

Time spent filling in the form, waiting for an appointment or gathering documents doesn't count. Times are counted in UK working days, and UK public holidays are included, but South African ones aren't.

Should you pay for priority?

ServiceExtra costUsual decision time
StandardIncluded3 weeks (12 weeks for family visas)
Priority£500 (R10,960)5 working days (30 working days for family visas)
Super Priority£1,000 (R21,920)End of the next working day

Priority is the realistic option from South Africa. Super Priority isn't reliably offered at South African centres, so don't plan around it. You'll see what's available for your visa when you book your VFS appointment.

Priority makes the most sense for family visas. Cutting 12 weeks to about 30 working days (roughly 6 weeks) saves the most time. For visas that already take 3 weeks, it's only worth it if you have a fixed date you can't move.

Priority only speeds up the decision. It doesn't improve your chances, and the fee is usually not refunded if your application is refused or takes longer.

What can make your application take longer?

UKVI can take longer if:

  • information on your form is wrong or incomplete,
  • they need more evidence or need to verify your documents,
  • they want to interview you,
  • your personal circumstances need a closer look, or
  • demand is high (for example, before the December holidays and the UK summer).

If your application will take longer, UKVI should contact you within the standard time. If the time has passed and you haven't heard anything, contact UKVI.

How far ahead should you start?

Plan around the whole process, not just the decision time:

VisaThings that take extra timeStart
VisitorVFS appointment, especially in peak seasonAt least 6–8 weeks before you travel
Skilled WorkerCertificate of Sponsorship from your employer, TB test, English evidenceAs soon as you accept the job
AncestryUnabridged birth certificates from Home Affairs, TB testSeveral months ahead; order documents first
Spouse / PartnerEnglish test, TB test, financial evidence, 12-week decisionAt least 4–5 months ahead

You can usually apply up to 3 months before you travel.

Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved. UKVI won't reimburse travel costs if your application is refused or delayed.
