Can your pet fly in the cabin to the UK?

No. Every pet dog, cat or ferret flying into Great Britain must travel as manifest cargo: in the aircraft hold, on its own air waybill, checked in at the cargo terminal rather than the passenger check-in desk. Pets can't fly in the cabin or as checked baggage on any flight into the UK.

The only exception is a recognised assistance dog, which can fly in the cabin. Emotional support dogs don't count.

The airline must also be on the UK government's approved list for pet travel, and fly into an airport approved for that airline.

Which airlines can fly pets from South Africa to the UK?

These airlines fly from South Africa and are on the UK's approved list (GOV.UK, updated 23 October 2026, checked 3 November 2026).

AirlineRoute from South AfricaApproved UK airports
British Airways (via IAG Cargo)Direct to HeathrowHeathrow, Gatwick
Emirates SkyCargoVia DubaiHeathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle

Being on the list means an airline is allowed to carry pets into the UK. It doesn't guarantee it will take a booking from your South African airport on your date. Your pet agent confirms that when they book.

The government list changes. Check the latest version on GOV.UK (linked in the sources below) before you commit to an airline.

Which airlines can't fly your pet to the UK?

AirlineWhy not
Virgin AtlanticDoesn't carry pets at all (cabin, baggage or cargo); not on the approved list
Norse AtlanticOn the approved list for Gatwick, but its own policy doesn't accept pets in the hold, so its seasonal Cape Town–Gatwick flight isn't an option
South African AirwaysNot on the UK's approved list (23 October 2026)

Is a direct flight better than a connection?

A direct British Airways flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Heathrow takes about 11 to 12 hours, so your pet spends the least time in its crate and isn't moved between aircraft.

A connecting flight can make sense if:

  • you're moving outside London and want to land in Manchester, Edinburgh or Glasgow
  • British Airways has no space on your date
  • your agent gets a better price on another airline

The trade-off is a longer journey and a transfer at the hub. Airlines also stop carrying animals when it's too hot or too cold at any airport on the route, which can rule out Gulf hubs in mid-summer. Ask your agent which route they recommend for your dates.

Where does your pet land in the UK?

At Heathrow, there are two animal reception centres: the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC), run by the City of London, and Animal Aircare (AAC). The airline decides which one handles your pet, not you. British Airways uses Animal Aircare. At Gatwick, Animal Aircare handles arrivals; at Manchester, it's Pets on Jets.

Staff scan your pet's microchip, check its paperwork and look it over. A UK agent then clears it through customs before you can collect it. Allow several hours from landing.

Which dogs can't fly to the UK?

Banned breeds can't enter Great Britain unless they already hold a valid Certificate of Exemption. The banned list includes the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully types. Check your dog's breed and type before you spend anything on vet work or flights.

Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds such as bulldogs, pugs and boxers have a higher risk when flying. Many airlines refuse them or insist on a larger crate, so check your airline's rules first.

What does your pet need before it can fly?

South Africa is an unlisted country for UK pet travel, so the rules are strict:

  1. Microchip, then rabies vaccination.
  2. Rabies blood test at least 30 days after the vaccination.
  3. Wait 3 months from the date the blood sample was taken.
  4. Great Britain pet health certificate, issued in the 10 days before your pet arrives. In South Africa, your vet completes it and a state vet endorses it.
  5. Dogs only: tapeworm treatment 1 to 5 days before arrival.

That's at least four months from start to finish, so start early.

How do you book your pet's flight?

Through a pet transport agent. IAG Cargo, which handles British Airways pet bookings, puts owners outside the UK in touch with its partner pet travel agents. At the UK end, airlines won't let a private owner clear a pet through customs, so you need a UK agent there too.

Book your own flight separately. Your pet's cargo booking is a different booking, and it may not be on the same plane as you.
