Shipping your household goods is one of the biggest moving costs after visas and flights. The price depends mostly on how much you're sending and which port you ship from. Container shipping is priced by quote, so treat the figures below as a budgeting guide and get real quotes before you decide.

Pound figures use R21.92/£ (Oct 2026). Rand prices are estimates published in May 2026.

How much does it cost to ship a container to the UK?

Shipping to London from20ft container40ft containerShared container (LCL)
JohannesburgR40,000–R55,000R70,000–R95,000R25,000–R35,000
DurbanR42,000–R57,000R75,000–R100,000R28,000–R38,000
Cape TownR45,000–R60,000R80,000–R105,000R30,000–R40,000

In pounds, that's roughly £1,820–£2,740 for a 20ft container and £3,190–£4,790 for a 40ft container.

Shipping to other UK cities costs about the same. For example, Cape Town to Manchester is estimated at R45,000–R62,000 for 20ft, and Johannesburg to Birmingham at R41,000–R56,000.

Check what each quote includes. Some quotes are port-to-port, others door-to-door. Packing, UK customs clearance, delivery to your new home and insurance can all be extra. Compare quotes like for like.

Which container size do you need?

OptionRoughly fitsBest for
Shared container (LCL)A few rooms or boxesSingles, couples, or shipping only some items
20ft containerA 2–3 bedroom homeMost families
40ft containerA 4–5 bedroom homeLarge homes, or shipping a vehicle with your goods

A good mover will do a survey (in person or by video) to work out the volume, which is what you're really paying for.

How long does shipping take?

MethodTime at sea or in the air
Full container (FCL)4–6 weeks
Shared container (LCL)6–10 weeks
Air freight2–5 days

Add 2–5 working days for UK customs and 1–3 days for delivery. Ships usually arrive at Felixstowe, Southampton or Tilbury.

Air-freight a small box of essentials. Air freight is charged by weight, so it's expensive for furniture, but worth it for the things you'll need in your first weeks while the container is at sea.

Do you pay UK duty or VAT on your belongings?

Usually not, if you claim Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief. You qualify if:

  • you've lived outside the UK for at least 12 months in a row,
  • you've owned and used the goods for at least 6 months,
  • you import them within 12 months of moving to the UK, and
  • you'll use them for the same purpose in the UK.

You must apply on form ToR1 and get approval from HMRC before you ship. You'll get a reference number to give your mover for the import declaration.

You can't sell, lend or give away goods brought in under ToR relief for 12 months after you move. Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles aren't covered, and restricted items like firearms still need licences.

How can you cut the cost?

  • Ship less. Sell or give away bulky, low-value furniture. UK homes are often smaller than South African ones, so big pieces may not fit anyway.
  • Use a shared container if you're only shipping part of your home.
  • Get at least three quotes, and check each one for the same inclusions.
  • Book early. Rates and space can tighten around peak moving times.
  • Insure the shipment. Check whether cover applies to items you packed yourself, as some policies exclude them.
